As we go about our daily lives, it is becoming more difficult to control our own activities and the time we commit to certain things. You have to contend with balancing your career, business, relationships, health, fun etc; and it seems like you are in the middle of this big roller coaster where everything is out of your control.
Overtime , we begin to develop certain habits that we believe will help us adapt to this new lifestyle, unfortunately most of the habits we form are dysfunctional to the kind of life we intend for ourselves. And then other areas of our lives begin to suffer.
It seems as if we lose more control as we try to gain control. More dysfunctional habits that lead us farther away from the life we desire. We then face the burden of trying to change all these habits all to no effect.
When we find ourselves in situations like this, what should we do?
How can focusing on one habit help us change every other habit?
1. Stop Fighting
Sometimes, the longer we fight, the more we lose our strength. At this point, stop trying to change all the habits at once. Just pick one of the habits and decide to focus on it.
2. Understand just 1.
Every habit has within it a thought, emotion and behaviour that helps it gain ground. What thoughts fuel the repetition of this habit? What feelings are you trying to fulfil by engaging in this behaviour repeatedly, is it functional or dysfunctional? How has this affected other areas of your life?
3. Get Accountable.
They say “you cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it”. You may need external help from a Coach, a therapist, a mentor, a friend etc who will help you see areas you’ve missed or not paid enough attention to.
4. Apply it to other areas.
Once you have been able to change one habit, using the law of antecedents, it’s easier to apply what you’ve learnt in order to change other habits.
Afree doing this, you’ll begin to gain control of your life.
